Everywhere Walkable
One of the many advantages of Hudson Valley Writers Residency campus in the heart of downtown is the ability to walk to everything. From the General Store and restaurants to the Library and Post Office, here are just a few favorite haunts the Village of Coxsackie has to offer Hudson Valley Writers Residents who come here to live and work.
Coxsackie General Store
Across the street from the Residence is Coxsackie General Store. Specializing in locally sourced goods and groceries from NY State and the Northeast. Coxsackie General features a coffee counter serving espresso, lattes, and batch brew using magical beans from Irving Farm Roastery (Millerton, NY). They have a daily selection of freshly baked scones, croissants and breads, and the grocery section features goods from local farms and makers, including local milk, eggs, pasture raised meats, salad greens, coffee beans, bread, cheese, ferments, jams, honey, maple syrup, chocolate, and more.
They also have options for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free diets. NEW additions to the shop include Craft Beer and Cider! Swing by and pick up a mixed pack of some of the best craft breweries of NY State and the East Coast.
Heermance Memorial Library
Directly next door to Hudson Valley Writers Residency is the beautiful Heermance Memorial Library. Past residents have chosen the Library as an off-campus place to write, another resident hosted a creative writing course and yet another participated in a ukulele class, borrowing an instrument to take home for practice - just a few examples of the resource sharing the Library and HVWR have enjoyed thanks to our proximity and mutual interest.
Riverside Park
Coxsackie’s Riverfront - acres of pristine waterfront serenity: walkways along the Hudson that make for enjoyable strolls during the ebbs of flow-state. The park features vessel and wildlife identification markers, historical quotes and plaques commemorating the rich area history. The recently refurbished Park is the gold standard in modern, public space-making.
Coxsackie Farmer’s Market
Wednesdays (May-October)
Riverside Park Pavilion hosts the Coxsackie Farmer’s Market Wednesday afternoons with fresh produce, baked goods, crafts, demos, locally brewed beer, food trucks, live music and more. The Farmer’s Market draws folks from near and far. Under the pavilion at Coxsackie Riverside Park
Waterfront tavern in a historic building serving cocktails, elevated pub food & signature pizzas. The lively atmosphere at Patrick Henry’s is a testament to its popularity and the menu curated by star chef from Albany, Dominick Purnomo. Dine indoors in the beautifully restored interiors or outdoors with views of the Hudson and The Wire event center next door - a converted brick foundry turned popular wedding venue that opened Summer of ‘23. Patrick Henry’s has something for everyone.
Patrick Henry’s Brick Oven Pizza and American Bistro
Ravish Liquors and Unquiet Antiques
A tiny jewel box of a bar with dark design and brass lights—it’s intimate and cozy,” Sarah Gray Miller says of her local speakeasy. “It’s not really a craft cocktail bar; our mixologist can make practically anything you want, but we’re more spirits-focused.” Libations are highly curated, given the bar’s small size: two choices each of vodkas, gins, and bourbons; a few whiskeys; one tequila, mezcal, and rum. Drinks by-the-glass range from $7-$15; cocktails with well brands are $12. A handful of red, white, rose, and sparkling wines range from $9-$15 per glass, and a few beer and sake options all run $8 or less.
Shipwrecked Bookstore Bar & Cafe
Delightful family-owned cafe, watering hole and boutique bookstore around the corner from HVWR, and a great place to write or work off campus. Wifi, Coffee, fresh, homemade bagels, madeleines and breakfast sandwiches by day; cocktails, tarot cards and village gossip by night, Shipwrecked is owned and operated by a local family who are actively involved in Village leadership and improvement. Everyone goes to Shipwrecked. Spend an hour or two there and you’re bound to meet nearly everyone in town.
Coxsackie Creamery
The ice cream store in town featuring generous scoops of Jane’s brand ice cream. The Coxsackie Creamery opened Summer of ‘23 and has become an anchor member of the Reed Street Historic District offerings. Hard to pass by without treating oneself to a scoop or three!
The Yellow Deli
With some of the tastiest sandwiches, soups and fresh baked goods this side of the Hudson, The Yellow Deli is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Sourced from their own network of farms from around the world, ingredients in Yellow Deli cuisine are grown and shipped all in-house, so every aspect of production is controlled by the Deli. Live edge wood benches and tables, hand painted murals and pot-bellied stove make for a rustic, inviting experience, and the deck out back offers dining with some of the best views of the Hudson and Riverside Park anywhere in the Village.
Che Figata
Family-owned and staffed Italian restaurant around the corner, Che Figata has been an anchor of the historic district from the get-go. Che offers a classic Italian menu with nightly chef specials and extensive offerings of salads, pastas and main course options. Great for a group night out or dining on one’s own, we keep coming back to Che Figata!
Reed Street Bottle Shop
Featured in the New York Times and Times Union as a paradigm of the Village’s revitalization, Bottle Shop has an artfully curated inventory of wines and spirits—everything the discerning customer and even the most sophisticated connoisseur could hope for in a liquor store, including passionate owners and staff who know their trade and take pride in meeting specific requirements. Looking for fruity but not too sweet with a hint of plum and a strong finish? Bottle Shop’s got this!
Steve’s Vintage Clothing
Another Family-owned and operated business in the historic district, Steve’s is a vintage clothing store named after the tasteful uncle whose vast collection (begun in the 1970’s) supplies this beloved area retailer with its chic inventory. In addition to progress on your article or manuscript, don’t be surprised if you come away from your residency with a piece or two from Steve’s closet!
